What is L-Methionine?
L-methionine is an essential amino acid required by the body to synthesize S-Adenosyl_methionine (SAMe), a naturally occurring compound found in almost every tissue and fluid in the body.SAMe plays a role in the immune system, helps maintain cell membranes and helps produce and break down brain chemicals such as serotonin, melatonin and dopamine.L-methionine is integrated with Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in producing SAMe.Methionine is an intermediate in the production of two other sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine and taurine, which enhance the body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins, build strong tissues and support cardiovascular health. The body utilizes sulfur to develop hair follicles and promote healthy hair, skin and nail growth. Sulfur improves the production of lecithin in the liver, which reduces liver fat, protects the kidneys, reduces bladder irritation by regulating the formation of ammonia in the urine and helps the body excrete heavy metals.Methionine is one of three amino acids needed by the body to manufacture creatine , a compound used for energy production and muscle building. This nutrient is found primarily in muscle tissue, and provides the energy muscles need to move. Creatine supports normal functioning of the heart and circulatory system.Methionine is lipotropic, assisting the liver in processing fats (lipids) more efficiently. Other lipotropic compounds include choline, inositol and betaine (trimethylglycine), all of which help ensure normal liver function. Methionine also supports liver function by maintaining healthy glutathione supplies, which neutralize toxins in the liver.
Health Benefits of Methionine
L-Methionine helps regulate the availability of folic acid, a vitamin necessary during pregnancy.Methionine also improves the body’s ability to synthesize muscle protein. As a source of sulfur, it is required for the synthesis of other substances important for the efficient production of energy in the body such as choline, creatine and carnitine. It assists in the breakdown of fats, supports the digestive system and helps eliminate toxins from the body since it can be converted to cysteine, a precursor to glutathione and another necessary ingredient in cleansing the liver.Methionine is an effective antioxidant. The sulfur it supplies intercepts and wards off free radical molecules that can damage cell membranes.
Other benefits of methionine are as following:
improves tone and pliability of hair, skin, and nails as it is essential for the formation of healthy collagen
chelates heavy metals, allowing them to be eliminated from the body
helps prevent premature ejaculation
helps prevent chronic depression
reduces the levels of inflammatory histamines in the body
helpful for treating urinary tract infection as it stops bacteria from sticking to and proliferating in the walls of the urinary tract
Suggested Use of Methionine
The suggested serving size for L-methionine is 500 milligrams taken one to two times per day, depending upon individual needs. 1/4 teaspoon serving will supply about 500 milligrams of this product.
Side Effects of Methionine
L-methionine is safe at suggested serving sizes. Studies have not found any drug interactions associated with methionine. Excessive use may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and irritability. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.
Mixing and Solubility of Methionine
L-Methionine has a sweet-and-sour flavor and dissolves quickly in hot water, but will not dissolve readily in cold water. Mix with hot water and a sweetener and drink.
